The Massachusetts minimum wage for most employees is $8.00 per hour.

The Massachusetts minimum wage for tipped employees is $2.63 per hour. Tipped employees must receive at least minimum wage when tips and wages are combined.

Q) Are employees entitled to extra pay for weekend, holiday, or night work?
The Minimum Fair Wage Law does not require extra pay for weekend, holiday, or night work; however, the Massachusetts Blue Laws, require some retailers to pay premium pay for Sundays and certain holidays. For more information about these laws, go to Massachusetts’ Blue Laws.

Q) Are employees entitled to sick pay, vacation pay, or severance pay?
The Minimum Fair Wage Law does not require employers to compensate for sick or vacation time when an employee is not at work, or offer severance pay upon termination.

Q) When is overtime compensation due?
Most employees must be paid one and one-half times their regular hourly rate for all hours worked in excess of 40 hours in a given work week. State law does not require overtime after eight hours in a day.

The Virginia minimum wage law tracks the federal minimum wage in terms of both amount and schedule. The Virginia minimum wage will increase to $7.25 from $6.55 effectively on July 24, 2009.

Virginia Tipped Minimum wage is $2.13 per hour with minimum of $7.25 per hour (salary + cash tips).

Q) How does an employer have to pay employees?
Employers must establish regular paydays and rates of pay for each employee, and it is a violation of law not to pay all wages due on the established payday. Hourly employees must be paid at least once every two weeks or twice a month; and salaried employees must be paid at least once each month. These requirements do not apply to executive personnel.

Q) When an employee terminates, when are his final wages due?
Final wages must be paid on or before the next regular payday on which the employee would have been paid had he remained employed.

Q) Can an employer reduce an employee’s rate of pay?
Yes; an employer can reduce an employee’s rate of pay provided the reduction does not bring an employee’s wage below the applicable federal or state minimum wage. Also, an employer must notify the affected employee prior to his being allowed or required to perform work at the reduced rate; the employee has the right to accept the lower rate or quit.

On July 24, 2009 the Pennsylvania minimum wage increased by 10 cents, from $7.15 per hour to $7.25 per hour.

Many employers wonder why all the fuss about such a small amount of money. However, under state law the Pennsylvania minimum wage cannot be less than the federal minimum wage. When the federal rate increases by 70 cents from $6.55 to $7.25 per hour later this month, by statute, the Pennsylvania minimum wage must increase, as well.
